The American bison design was produced by James Earle Fraser in 1912. He wanted to capture the wild American frontier with his artwork. The design was originally used on the Buffalo Nickel coins which were minted from 1913 to 1938. It is believed that the buffalo used in the design was Black Diamond, a buffalo housed at Central Park Zoo at the time.
